Desk is an external expression of the inside of your brain. It is also the visible expression of what’s going on in there. There are generally standards for what you may be permitted to show. You may enjoy twelve-inch-high action figures of semi-nude buxom female superheroes from the Batman universe. Your female colleagues might not share your appreciation. Your collection of Smurfs or wall-to-wall display of your child’s artwork might also be considered a distraction. Within the lines, though, you have a lot of discretion. There’s no need to keep your desk overly neat, by the way. An employee whose desk is clear at three p.m. may not be organized. He or she might simply getting set for quitting time two hours early.
